Phobias

What is a phobia? The word phobia originated from the greek word phobos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear". A phobia is a type of anxiety order which is defined as a continual fear of a certain object or situation in which the sufferer acts in great length in avoiding despite the fact that the fear being recognized to others as irrational.

Some phobias may sound funny or odd to others but not to those who are actually suffering from them. Here are some interesting phobias that I found.

Philophobia: Fear of LOVE

From Wikipedia: Philophobia is the fear of being in love or falling in love. The risk is usually when a person has confronted any emotional turmoil relating to love in the past but can also be a chronic phobia. Philophobia is defined abnormal, persistent and unwarranted fear of falling in love. This affects the quality of life and pushes a person away from commitment. It also triggers various symptoms that may incorporate sweating, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, feelings of dread, nausea and feeling of restlessness. The worst aspect of fear of being in love and falling in love is that it keeps a person in solitude.

My opinion: To fear love is kind of hard, don't you think? Because you fear of falling in love, you build a wall around yourself so that no one can get near you and you become lonely with no one by your side. That's just sad. I don't think anyone should be afraid of love. It's not like it's a bad thing. The worse thing that could happen is that you get heartbroken but hey, everyone experiences that. It's kinda like the circle of life or something. I don't think anyone should fear falling or being in love because that would be impossible because everyone's going to fall in love someday. It's the human nature to love, right? To avoid something that's impossible is just crazy talk! Haha! But then again, I never had this kind of phobia so what do I know, right? It's not like those people who's suffering from this phobia asked to be like this. Who in the right mind would ever want to afraid of love?

Phobophobia: Fear of Having a PHOBIA

From Wikipedia: Phobophobia is a fear defined as the fear of phobias or the fear of fear including intense anxiety and unrealistic and persistent fear of the somatic sensations and the feared phobia ensuing. Phobophobia can also be defined as the fear of phobias of the fear of developing a phobia. Phobophobia is related to anxiety disorder and panic attacks directly linked to other types of phobias.

My opinion: It must really be difficult for those who are suffering from this. To have a phobia of developing a phobia is like having a phobia of the master of all phobias. Does what I just said make any sense to you? Oh, well.

Somniphobia: Fear of SLEEP

From Wikipedia: Hypnophobia or somniphobia is an abnormal fear of sleep. It may result from a feeling of control loss or from repeating nightmares. The prefix hypno originates from the greek word hupnos which means sleep.

My opinion: I so don't ever want to develop this phobia because I love sleeping. Haha! I sleep in class a lot since school. It's pretty sad for someone to fear sleep. Sleep is a way we rest, right? So if you don't sleep, you won't get any rests and that's not good for your health. It might be dangerous too. If you're sleepy, you can't do anything right and you can't focus. This may lead to accidents. It's pretty dangerous.

Claustrophobia: Fear of Being CLOSED IN

From Wikipedia: The word Claustrophobia originated from the latin word, claustrum meaning "a shut in place".

My opinion: I think this is a pretty common phobia. I've heard of it before. If you love Korean dramas then you would probably have watched "Secret Garden", right? Yeah, it's like really famous in Korea. In this hit drama, Hyun Bin's character is claustrophobic. That's why he got all freaked out when he entered the tunnel while driving. And yet he still managed to look so handsome. Hehehe~ It must have been hard for those people who are claustrophic. They can't be in closed in places which can sometimes be difficult because they can't take the lift. So what are they going to do? Take the stairs? Well, they can but what if it's a really, really tall building with so many levels? It would be hard.

Hyun Bin, everybody!

Androphobia: Fear of MEN

From Wikipedia: Androphobia is an abnormal fear of men. Androphobia may be related to traumatic events in the sufferer's past. It may also be due to social phobia or social anxiety disorder.

My opinion: Fear of men? This just crossed my mind. Your dad's a man so does that mean those who are androphobic are afraid of their fathers? What about their brothers and grandfathers? Their uncles? Their male cousins??? (I think too much).

Gynophobia: Fear of WOMEN

From Wikipedia: Gynophobia (also spelled as gynephobia) is an abnormal fear of women. In the past, the Latin term was used, horror feminae meaning "fear of women". The word caligynophobia is also coined to be the fear of beautiful women. For the latter one the expression venustraphobia is also used. In many cases it may also be rooted in social phobia or social anxiety disorder.

My opinion: Does that mean only men have this phobia. Women can't possibly develop this phobia, right? I mean, that's like fearing yourself. If you're a woman and you're afraid of women then it means you're afraid of yourself? How can you avoid yourself? One thing that came to mind. SURGERY. Whoa! Errrr... I hope no women would ever develop this phobia.

Medication Phobia: Fear of MEDICATION

From Wikipedia: Medication phobia (also known as pharmacophobia) is the fear of the use of pharmacological treatments. In severe, excessive and irrational, cases, it may be a type of specific phobia. While lack of awareness by patient or doctor of adverse drug reactions can have serious consequences, having a phobia of medications can also have serious detrimental effects on patient health, for example refusal of necessary pharmacological interventions. Medication phobia can also lead to problems with medication compliance. Medication phobia can also be present in parents who are concerned about giving medication to their children, fearing that the medications will do more harm than good. Medication phobia can be triggered by unpleasant adverse reactions to medications which are sometimes prescribed inappropriately or at excessive doses. Lack of awareness of the patient's predisposition to adverse effects (e.g. anxious patients and the elderly) and failure to attribute the adverse effects to the drug serves to compound the phobia.

My Opinion: Ohohoho.. To be afraid of medication has got to be difficult since you need medication when you're sick or you could die if it's left untreated. This is about life and death, people. It's serious. Really serious. It is serious, right? Hehe~

Phasmophobia: Fear of GHOSTS

From Wikipedia: The fear of ghost in many human cultures is based on beliefs that some ghosts may be malignant towards people and dangerous (within the range of possible attitudes including mischievous, benignant, indifference, etc.). The fear of ghosts is sometimes referred to as phasmophobia and erroneously spectrophobia, the latter being an established term for fear of mirrors and one's own reflection.

My opinion: I say this is all those horror movies' faults. We should stop making movies about avenging ghosts with long hairs and wearing white clothes (why is it that ghosts are always women in movies?) killing people and start making movie that could actually have some moral in them. And why is it that people these days love to watch scary movie? Then you get all paranoid and scared that something is watching you after the movie is over. Seriously...

These are other interesting phobias that I Found:

Ambulophobia: Fear of walking

But don't get confused with people who actually has this phobia with people who are just too lazy to walk.

Selenophobia: Fear of the moon

There are people who are afraid of the moon? But I like the moon (some of my friends call me "mun"). hikhik~

Panaphobia: Fear of everything

Whoa! And you guys thought you have problems, huh? Being afraid of everything? That's serious.

Oenophobia: Fear of wine

So does that mean they don't drink alcohol? That's good.

Logizomechanophobia: Fear of computers

If you're reading this, then you probably don't have this unless you're not reading this through your computer.

Some of these phobias may seem irrational to you but that's what phobias aren't supposed to be rational. It may seem funny to you but to the people who are actually suffering from this phobias.. yeah, they don't really think it's amusing. In fact, it can be stressful so let us not laugh at these people. It's not like they ask to be like this.
